How to Optimize Your LinkedIn Profile: A 2026 Checklist

“Optimizing” your LinkedIn profile isn't about tricks. It's about two things: making it easy for the right people to find you (the right terms, clearly placed), and easy for a human to see your value fast (evidence, not job descriptions).

Here's the order to work in, because the first two sections carry most of the weight.

1. Fix the headline first

It's the most-seen line and the fastest win. Put your target role and 2–3 real skills in the first ~50 characters. See our headline guide for role-by-role examples.

2. Rewrite the first two lines of your About

Only the first ~230 characters show before “…see more,” so those two lines decide whether anyone reads on. Lead with what you do and the proof — not “I am a passionate, results-driven professional.” Then use the rest to tell a short, specific story about the work you want more of.

3. Turn duties into outcomes in your experience

Recruiters skim experience for results, not responsibilities. For each bullet, ask: “so what changed because I did this?”

  • Duty: “Responsible for the onboarding process.”
  • Outcome: “Rebuilt onboarding, cutting new-hire ramp from 6 weeks to 3.”
  • If you don't have the number yet, leave a bracket and go find it — never invent one.

4. Curate skills — quality over quantity

A focused set of relevant skills beats a wall of 40. Put the ones most central to your target role first, and make sure your experience actually backs them up.

5. Close the obvious gaps

  • A clear, current photo and a background image that isn't the default.
  • A custom URL (linkedin.com/in/yourname).
  • Location and “open to work” settings that match your search.
  • Experience dates and titles that line up with your resume.

A note on honesty

The fastest way to lose a recruiter is an invented metric. They read hundreds of profiles and can spot a fabricated “increased revenue 40%” instantly — and once they do, they doubt everything else. Optimize by making your real story legible, not by making up a better one.
