Should You Turn On LinkedIn's #OpenToWork? An Honest Take

LinkedIn's Open to Work has two modes, and they're very different. Here's the honest trade-off so you can choose deliberately.

The two options

  • Recruiters only: signals availability to LinkedIn Recruiter users but shows no public badge. Lower risk.
  • Public #OpenToWork banner: the green photo frame everyone can see, including your current employer.

The case for the public banner

It's a clear signal, it can prompt your network to help, and some recruiters filter for it. If you're already unemployed or openly looking, the downside is small and the reach is real.

The case against it

Some worry it can read as a signal of desperation to certain hiring managers, and if you're employed, your boss can see it. It's a personal call, not a rule — plenty of people get hired with it on, and plenty with it off.

A reasonable default

Employed and discreet: use recruiters-only. Openly job-searching: the public banner's reach usually outweighs the downside. Either way it's no substitute for a profile that reads well — the banner gets you found; the profile gets you the reply.
