Just Got Laid Off? Update Your LinkedIn Profile Today

A layoff is a lot to process, and "go fix your LinkedIn" is probably not what you want to hear on day one. But recruiters and hiring managers do search LinkedIn first, and a profile that still says you work somewhere you don't creates confusion you don't need right now.

You don't have to rewrite everything today. Here's what actually matters in the first day or two, and what can wait.

Do this first

  • Update your headline to your target role and 2–3 real skills — not just "Open to Work". A headline that only says you're searching tells recruiters nothing they can search for.
  • Turn on the "Open to Work" setting, and use the recruiter-only visibility option if you'd rather your current employer's network not see the banner.
  • Rewrite the first two lines of your About section so they describe what you do and where you're headed — that's the part that shows before "see more".
  • Set your end date on your most recent role if it isn't already there. An open-ended current job that ended weeks ago is the single most confusing thing on a laid-off profile.

How to talk about the layoff

You don't owe anyone a detailed explanation, and you don't need to over-explain in your About section. One honest, neutral line is enough — something like "Following a company-wide reduction in force, I'm looking for my next [role] opportunity."

Skip anything that reads as bitter about the old employer, even if it's justified. Hiring managers read that as a risk signal, not as sympathy.

What can wait a few days

  • A full rewrite of your experience bullets — worth doing, but not urgent enough to block you from applying this week.
  • Requesting recommendations — better once you've had a moment to think about who to ask.
  • Building out a portfolio or featured section — valuable, but the headline and About do more of the work early on.

A few things not to do

  • Don't leave your old title as your current role for weeks — it's the fastest way to make recruiters skip past you when the dates don't add up.
  • Don't panic-apply with a half-updated profile — a mismatched headline and About costs you more than an extra hour today would.
  • Don't invent a title or scope you didn't have to make the gap look better. It's checkable, and it's not necessary.
