How to Use LinkedIn to Actually Find a Job

A polished profile is table stakes — but LinkedIn only works as a job-search tool when you use it actively. Here's the practical loop.

1. Get the profile right first

Recruiters who find you (or who you reach out to) will judge you on your profile in seconds. Fix the headline and About before anything else — see our optimization guide.

2. Use search like a recruiter would

Search the exact job titles you want plus 'is hiring', or filter by recent posts. Find the actual hiring manager or recruiter for a role, not just the job post.

3. Reach out with something specific

A generic 'I'd love to connect' gets ignored. A short note that names the role, one relevant thing about your background, and a clear ask gets replies.

  • Bad: 'Hi, I'm interested in opportunities at your company.'
  • Better: 'Hi [name] — saw the [role] opening. I've done [specific relevant thing]; would a quick note on my fit be useful?'

4. Be visible without being noisy

Commenting thoughtfully on posts in your field puts your name in front of the right people and drives profile views — often more effectively than posting constantly yourself.

5. Turn on the right signals

Set your location and job preferences to match your search, and consider the Open to Work setting (see our honest take) so recruiters searching for candidates can find you.
